No more meat ban in Bhutan

Almost eight years after the government banned the sale of meat on auspicious months (1st and 4th months of the Bhutanese calendar), the National Assembly on January 8 lifted the ban.

But the house agreed to prohibit the sale of meat on the auspicious days of 8th, 15th and 30th day of every Bhutanese month, and on the 4th day of the 6th month. Sale of meat would also be banned on the descending day of Lord Buddha. The agriculture minister, Pema Gyamtsho, told the house that the ban was ineffective. He said that the rule was there but nobody actually followed it. “The ban was in fact risky for consumers, because thousands of people rushed to the meat stalls around the country to stock up for weeks ahead of the ban,” he said. “People stocked meat in refrigerators and some used unhygienic ways with risks of food poisoning and other diseases.”

The minister said that many tourists and guests faced inconvenience during the ban. He also said that, in these two auspicious months, many Bhutanese conduct a series of religious rituals, of which meat was an important part.

Gasa MP Damchoe Dorji also argued that the ban should not be lifted. He said that the ban in the two most auspicious months would not only save the lives of many animals, but stop the slaughterhouses and farms, which would come up in the country in future.

While some MPs said that most people still consume meat during the auspicious months, some said that the two-month ban would only work if Bhutanese people consciously stop eating meat. But many members of parliament agreed with the agriculture minister that, with the ban, lives of animals were shortened by months because of the demand of the people, who stored meat in advance.

The owner of Capital meat shop in Thimphu told Kuensel that his sales escalated by more than double just before the ban. Records from the Bhutan agriculture and food regulatory authority in Thimphu showed that Bhutan imports about 6000 kg of beef, 3000 kg of pork and some 2500 kg of fish daily. Bhutan imported around 3,000 metric tonnes of beef, 2,000 metric tonnes of pork and around 1,500 metric tonnes of fish in 2008.

  2. They can actually get more folks to come and visit Bhutan with this meat ban lift! In my opinion, the lesser the rules implemented EXCLUSIVELY in a certain country, the more investors and tourists are likely to visit.

  3. Bengali and Bangladeshi : The Identity Debate

Most people do not know the difference between Bengali (WB, India) and Bangladeshi identity. They are two different identities. Bangladeshi people are often confused as Bengali. They are quite different. They (Bangladeshi) have separate language with accent, history, culture and geographical demarcation. A Bangladeshi may claim to be but not exactly a Bengali. They use Bengali as co-identity.

Normally the Bangladeshi people claim Bengali as their official mother tongue and official identity. Virtually it is their step-motherly tongue and step-fatherly identity. But due to emotional attachment of 1971 war this fact is unknown and kept secret.

Bengali language is originally based on dialect spoken in Calcutta and both bank of lower Ganga river (India). Bangladeshi people do not speak Bengali language. They speak Bangladeshi language. Bengali and Bangladeshi is like or more than Hindi-Punjabi difference or Swish-German difference. Though officially Bengali is considered their mother tongue, virtually they speak Bangladeshi which is far different from being Bengali.

There is similar problem in Hindi and Urdu. Officially Hindi and Urdu different language but when spoken it is same language.

Bangladeshi people (except Brahmans) cannot be awarded Bengali identity. Brahmans are a race who originally comes from North India. They do not fall into the Bengali-Bangladeshi classification. The Bangladeshi language, accent, intonation, culture is quite different from those of Bengali (Calcutta and lower Ganga river). They are known in different names to different neighbouring places, Rohinga in Myanmer, Bhatia in Assam, Banggal in Kolkata, etc. For detail please collect and read the book. (Reply for PDF copy).

  5. Annapurna Circuit Trek, one of the best trekking destinations in Nepal not even only in Nepal among the world it is one the best. Annapurna Circuit Trekking used to be twenty-two days long before when there are no such motor roads on lower belt of Manang and Mustang. Major highlight of trek is Thorong La Pass, which is world’s widest pass. Often known as Annapurna Round Trek it make one complete circle of Annapurna Himalayan Range. Round Annapurna Trekking can be elongated with additional side trip to Tilicho Lake. Or setting camp in top of Thorong Pass and peak climbing of Thorong Peak can be best climbing experience on Nepal.

  7. As we know there are several alternatives for trekking in Annapurna Region, among those alternatives Nar Phu Valley Trek can be best. Narphu area is declared as restricted region for trekking so one needs to obtain special pass before going for Nar Phu Valley Trek. Untouched by modernization area still had lot to offer for exploring ancient rural housing and tradition. Narphu valley trekking had specific days permit so it is not easy to spent extra time on restricted region, as well as Narphu Valley Trekking can be elongated with trip toward Annapurna circuit instead of descending back to Kathmandu.

  8. Sandwiched in between Mount Kanchenjunga and Mount Everest, Makalu towers high with crown of 5th highest mountain in the world. Makalu Base Camp Trek that last around eighteen days is a real adventure with absence of teahouses, small stones hut offering accommodation during trekking season and rest of the quarter of year descend down to Tashi Gaon and further below. Makalu Trek is best to be done on camping basis with big crews, as stone huts cannot offer proper accommodation especially during kitchen stuffs with smokes. Makalu Trekking has lot more to offer in term of remoteness and virginity as very few trekkers hit the trail of Makalu each year.

  9. Manaslu Trek, which is emerging as a perfect teahouse trekking trail on the middle of Nepal Himalayas. With an entire circuit Manaslu Circuit Trekking make a complete round of Mount Manaslu with high elevation of Larke La Pass around 5170 m from sea level. Manaslu Trekking can be accompanied with side trip to Tsum Valley, which is probably the most sacred area of Nepal. Instead of camping trek Manaslu Tea House Trek Nepal is best alternatives to avoid big hustle bustle of camping crew. Normally trekking can last for minimum of thirteen days to eighteen days.

  10. Upper Mustang Trek although expensive in term of permits, which cost around USD 500 for first ten day is worth to spend as history and culture are still well preserved. Mustang Trek Nepal is epic ten days trek in the border toward Tibet with deserted landscapes similar to Tibetan plateau. Mustang Trekking can also be best with exploration up to temple of Muktinath instead of spending much amount on permits that might not be affordable for everyone. Upper Mustang Trekking can be more than trekking with spiritual experience with side trip to Damodar Kunda and temple of holy Muktinath.
