Saving tourism from global economic downturn

The government approved measures requested by the tourism industry to minimize the impact of current global economic recession on tourist arrivals in the country on Friday.

In a news release, the Tourism Council of Bhutan says the government has agreed to defer the tariff revision from US$ 200-250 till a later date that will be determined by the performance of the industry.

From July 1, this year, a discount of US$ 20 will be given on the royalty during peak months. A discount of US$ 15 will be given during the off season to tourists after their 9th night in the Kingdom.

In addition, the Hotel Association of Bhutan has agreed to refrain from raising room tariffs in 2009.

The national airline Druk Air will resume its low season discounts. Druk Air has already reduced the fuel surcharge by US$ 3 from December 17, 2008.
